Leviathan is the monster thriller about a komodo dragon whose chromosomes were changed to create the ultimate reptilian weapon able to decimate an entire army divsion by itself. However, the black project managers neglected to show the script to Leviathan, which promptly escapes as we knew it would and killed a large number of army rangers immediately. The rest of the story is the saga of Conner, an unlikely electrician and hero, Thor an impossibly large Norwegian warrior, Beth who is Conner's wife and an unparalled computer whiz, an army colonel, Barley a tall and muscular army officer who is proficient with any weapon and explosives, the not-so-mad brilliant scientist who created Leviathan and Conner's son. Leviathan's murderous chase is long and overly protracted, but in the end, Leviathan meets his electrical match in Conner's blue collar skill set.

I liked the unlikely action and super abilities of Leviathan: impenetrable skin/armor, high intelligence with the ability to think and process five times faster than a human, a flame thrower for bad breath and the ability to run 95 miles per hour despite standing 16 feet tall and weighing six tons.

What I didn't get was the traditional religion polemics with Thor's character. Leviathan was reportedly favorably reviewed by Frank Peretti, a well-known Christian writer with an ax to grind with biotechnology and scientists playing god. However, the main issue in Leviathan is that of good versus evil. The baddie in Leviathan is Blake, a full bird colonel who foolishly reawakens Leviathan the monstrous komodo dragon out of his nitrogen managed slumber with murderous results. The writer ratchets up the already considerable tension between Leviathan's murderous quest for food and revenge versus the survivors attempts to kill Leviathan with the introduction of a nuclear fail safe device set to go off if Leviathan manages to escape. The only problem with that in the book is that the entire facility is locked down by the artificially intelligent facility computer, which is not resolved until the last few seconds of the countdown to nuclear destruction.

I think the basic story is a good one, but this author over-wrote this story. Leviathan is like a stew where the cook cleaned out their refrigerator in order to use up all possible ingredients. The other weakness with Leviathan is its pacing. The author takes a long time to set up the initial scene and there are long down periods throughout the story. In addition, this author like many other writers, likes to dazzle with scientific detail a la Michael Crichton, but he does not pull it off. I did not buy into his explanation for Leviathan's ability to breath fire, to give you an example.

Leviathan James Byron Huggins 9780785272632 Books Reviews

Read this book when I was growing up, and again as an adult. Still an awesome story! Great adventure, exciting to the finish! Would highly recommend this for everyone!
Hello, The book had a good story and could have been more exciting. It was a little too religious for me. I am a Christian, but maybe not as gung ho as the author. The book had some great characters but just did not do it for me. Just my opinion. Thanks.
SPIRITUAL - "GOOD vs EVIL" Story This is the second book I have read by Mr. Huggins (HUNTER was my first). I liked "Leviathan "even more because of the spiritual nature and action of the book. In both books I see it as a Good vs Evil, Man vs Beast premise. The book went beyond my expectations. I am ready to read more books by Mr. Huggins.
Excellent story. Fairly typical e-book formatting errors. Honestly, I've made dozens of ebook purchases and have never NOT seen formatting errors. For example in "Leviathan," there are a few pages where there are question marks instead of quotation marks. I don't LIKE it, but it doesn't really affect readability.
Thank you for this one James Huggins! Great story, great characters, a mythical creature but made by scientists and engineers, all for the use of military application. A good idea? No! A fight for good against evil.
This book was very terrifying to think that somewhere in the world scientists as messing around with DNA trying to replicate and change the DNA to suit their purposes, under the guise of research with several countries knowing about it. It was intense and I had to put it down each chapter and read something less intense for a day or so in order to get through it. Many twists and turns through the story but it certainly kept the pace up and the reader on the edge of their seat.
While I enjoyed this novel very much, I could see this as a movie on the Syfy Channel. It definitely has all the elements you would find in one, a group of scientists working on a secret military project in a remote area, an unlikely hero in a Viking type man with a mysterious history of his own, and a hired man just trying to protect his wife and child. For action fans, the action is non-stop, particularly the last half of the book. Huggins knows his audience and gives them what they want!
