Literary Agents How to Get and Work With the Right One for You Writer Basic Bookshelf Michael Larsen 9780898792133 Books
Michael Larsen's book, Literary Agents: How to Get and Work With the Right One for You, has long since gone the way of the dinosaurs - supplanted by newer, longer versions of how-to-get-an-agent books. Having read the update of this book, and of several others on the same topic, I have to say that this little volume stands out as the clearest, most concise, and most accurate statement of what an agent wants from a writer. It's right there on page 58: "You've got to convince yourself and your publisher [read: agent] that you harbor a consuming lust for success and that you are irresistibly driven to do whatever it takes to make your books sell. Unless you jump into book promotion body and soul, you'd be better off working on your next book."
Yea, verily. Go ahead, work on crafting the perfect query letter. Go to that writers conference and shmooze. But, until you can build up some lust, and can back it up with a plan that demonstrates that you know what to do with it, do not bother contacting an agent. They aren't in the business for love, they are in it for money - and they can't make any if you don't.
I would advise anybody who is trying to break into the publishing world to read between the lines of this book very carefully.
