I do love the Alex Benedict stories because there is always excitement. I will say that this was a bit more subdued than usual though. The characters were still interesting and full of life. The science was good and made me want to see just how much was actually real, if any. The locations from Earth to the asteroid belt is described wonderfully. It is just an overall fun and suspenseful ride.

The Capella, an interstellar which has been lost for eleven years is about to surface again. On that ship is Alex's Uncle Gabriel and 2600 other passengers who may not know what has happened to them. Everyone is hoping they can rescue them and keep the ship from going back into the time/space warp it has been trapped in. While Alex deals with this a friend comes to him with a communications devise from the dawn of space travel. People have been looking for lost artifacts from the moon as well as NASA that went missing 8000 years ago. Then this pops up and Alex promises to help track down whether any others are still in existence. As usual he is being targeted for his search, which could be placing him and Chase in a deadly situation.

I love science fiction, particularly good science above everything. These stories take you so far into the future that it is always good just see that humanity could still exist, because some days I have my doubts. I would definitely recommend this as well as all the books in this series. Jack McDevitt is a great story teller who can take you to the edge and back.

McDevitt does it again . The Alex Benedict Novels have always been one of my favorite storylines and in some ways this has come full circle, giving the reader a history that goes back from the book's present to our own. That it gives the series a sense of full circle, I wonder if this is the last of the Benedict novels, or a turn to new future.

One aside. I really hope Mister McDevitt is wrong with all that has been lost. I'd like to think we can as a species work for better ways to hold onto our past a bit better than that. But sadly, I can also see such a dark age occurring, and possibly sooner than what was in the book series.
This 7th book in the Alex and Chase series is a fun adventure and makes an excellent addition to the series. There are two main plot lines. One involves the rescue of people from the Capella space liner (including Alex's uncle Abe). The ship carrying some two thousand passengers has been trapped in trans-dimensional space for 11 years although it has been only a few days for the passengers. But the ship "re-surfaces" into normal space for about 10 hours every 5 years. A noted Rimway scientist is working on a fix to the drive to bring it permanently out of warped space.

The other and more interesting plot line is to figure out why Garnett Baylee, a noted seeker of space age artifacts, would have left a valuable artifact from this era in his attic (of which he told no one) that was discovered by his niece some 11 years after his death. Alex and Chase expend a lot of time and effort looking into this to solve this mystery and to see if other Golden Age space artifacts can be found.
Coming Home

This was a good story and it even tied in with the other novels of Jack McDevitt. In fact, there is a scene where Chase wonders if she would like the fictional character Hutchins (also a McDevitt invention in the Priscilla Hutchins series).

Two stories are going on at the same time. Gabe, Alex’s uncle who we thought dead was actually lost in a time warp in an interstellar ship. It’s due to “surface” to our time in a few months. While they make preparations for his possible return, Alex also is investigating the discovery of an old transmitter from the early centuries of spaceflight. With the granddaughter of the discoverer’s help, Alex and Chase go all over the place to find where this transmitter came from, hoping that it will lead to the treasure of Apollo artifacts thought lost centuries ago during the Dark Ages.

OK, this story does give us a view of our possible future, with economic collapses, a future dark ages that last centuries, the countries formerly known as the USA and Russia dissolve, and a benign universal government, the Confederacy of worlds, is further described and detailed.

The story has some harrowing escapes, a death threat and Chase not getting a boyfriend. You know, the usual McDevitt tale.

I recommend it, especially because the author links his earlier tales all the way back to the original A Talent for War.
I get the impression the author is not fully involved with this universe any more. Two bits of evidence tell me that he has the book's characters make a reference to a thousands-year-ancient science fiction author who is obviously McDevitt. He also has Chase (the book's first-person speaker) admit she is writing and publishing books on their adventures.

I've seen this from at least one other author -- who shortly thereafter had other writers take up the "further adventures" of the main character.

Regardless, this Benedict novel is less satisfying than others. There is a obligatory central mystery that gets revealed after the equally obligatory wrong paths taken. But the author spends most of the book building a future history derived from a nearer-future crash of civilization followed by anarchy, along the lines of Asimov's Foundation series. *Some* of that was a necessary core of the book. The total amount detracted from the story line.

Additionally, the Rescues that are the science part don't bring the sense of wonder that other Benedict discoveries have.

It was a fast read with a good mystery. It just left me wishing for more.
Like all Jack McDevitt novels Coming Home starts slowly with a lot of foundation laid before the plot takes off. This, like all the Alex Benedict novels is not an action tale. It is thoughtful and character driven rather than action packed. It is, however, superbly written.
